SHAWANGUNK RESIDENTS MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD!

SHAWANGUNK RESIDENTS ALERT!
SHAWANGUNK RIDGE STEWARDSHIP ZONES ARE UNDER ATTACK!

The Town of Shawangunk has proposed two Ridge Stewardship Zones to protect the fragile and rare environmental resources and scenic beauty of the Shawangunk Ridge by restricting development that would mar the scenic landscapes of the Town's higher elevations, and by establishing a density of development appropriate for the protection of the thin and fragile soil conditions and associated rare plant and animal habitats found there.

Together the two zones follow the boundaries of the previously-designated Critical Environmental Area of the Shawangunk Ridge which provides increased scrutiny through the State Environmental Quality Review Act .

THE SHAWANGUNK TOWN BOARD IS CAVING IN TO A FEW LOUD VOICES.
MAKE YOUR "SAVE THE RIDGE" VOICES HEARD!

The difference between the two zones lies in their lot density and their permitted uses based on elevations.

RIDGE STEWARDSHIP ZONE #1: On the higher and steeper elevations, a minimum lot size of 7 acres would be required to reduce density, and uses that could cause erosion would be prohibited.

RIDGE STEWARDSHIP ZONE #2 : On the lower elevations, the minimum lot size of 5 acres would allow increased density, and those uses that require discharge of water and heavy machinery would be permitted (with a Special Use Permit).

The newly-proposed Shawangunk Ridge Stewardship Zones are under threat of being substantially weakened!

Ridge Stewardship Zone #1 (proposed 7-acre density)
Oregon Trail was proposed to form part of the eastern boundary of Ridge Stewardship Zone #1. The Town Board has now proposed to move the boundary up-mountain, making it smaller by as much as 1000 feet in, all along Oregon Trail so that property on both sides of Oregon Trail will be in the less restrictive Zone #2.

Ridge Stewardship Zone #2
In addition, the density for Ridge Stewardship Zone #2 is being changed from 5-acre to 3-acre zoning.

Other Proposed Changes:
  1. The proposal for suggestions of natural house colors and natural materials (not a mandate - just a suggestion) may be deleted,
  2. The lighting restrictions requiring lighting to face downward may be lessened to allow for lighting of American flags.
  3. The tree-cutting provision which allows for the personal cutting of no more than 15 cord per 5 acre parcel, and prohibits the clear cutting of more than 20,000 square feet (1/2 acre) may be deleted. [Parcels in the State 480-a Forestry program would still be required to conform to those conditions].
Tell the members of the Shawangunk Town Board that Ridge Stewardship is important to you, and that YOU DO NOT WANT ANY CHANGE IN THE PROPOSED RIDGE STEWARDSHIP ZONES!
