Save the Ridge is a group of people opposed to the development proposed
by John Bradley and Chaffin/Light for the so-called Awosting Reserve on the
southeast slope of the Northern Shawangunks. The 2700 acres are adjacent at
the ridge to Minnewaska State Park, and their wild state is essential to the
integrity of the ecosystem there as well as to the natural beauty of the
area. To build luxury, exclusive housing for the few instead of considering
the benefit of the many (and of nature itself) is arrogant, selfish, and
short-sighted. And it is undemocratic. Our method is to encourage democratic
participation by all interested parties in all phases of consideration of
this ill-conceived plan.
We have no membership rolls; rather, we are structured into a network of committees and individuals that do the work. There is a coordinating committee that tries to keep some oversight over committee work and think through strategies and new ideas. We can use help with any of the following.
Some committees and projects are:
Gardiner (for Gardiner residents concerned about zoning and Gardiner politics)
Shawangunk (ditto)
Signs (coordinating their distribution)
Liaison (outreach to groups and schools, doing talks or slideshows)
Writing (brochures, press releases, etc.)
Publicity (press relations, contact with politicians, etc.)
Events (parties, public meetings, fundraising events)
Petitions and Tabling (purveying out literature, t-shirts, etc. at festivals and events)
Research
Database
Fundraising
We can especially use people who would like to “man” a table occasionally, distribute signs, help plan special events, or do database entry.
