Review Process

In New York State, most projects or activities proposed by a New York State agency or by a unit of local government, or which require discretionary approval from a NYS agency or a unit of local government, are subject to the NYS Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR). SEQR requires that the sponsoring or approving governmental body identify and mitigate the significant environmental impacts of the activity it is proposing or permitting. Proposed Awosting development

Plans for a large-scale development threaten the 2,700-acre Awosting Reserve. Adjacent to and south of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, the Awosting Reserve is located in the towns of Gardiner, Shawangunk, and Wawarsing.

The Mohonk Preserve’s Board of Directors states its opposition (PDF, 115KB) to the planned Awosting Reserve development.

On Monday, December 22, 2002, the development plan was submitted to the town of Gardiner by Roger Beck and Chaffin Light. Plan calls for:

349 houses:
269 on 2 - 2.5 acres
52 on ONE acre and
28 on 1/2 acre parcels


The plan also calls for a nature center, golf course, fitness center, swimming pool and restaurant.
