A huge luxury development is being planned on a 2600 acre parcel on the Shawangunk Ridge in the towns of Gardiner and Shawangunk, New York. This crucial segment of land adjoins Minnewaska Park and Sam's Point Preserve. Because the northern Shawangunk Ridge remains unfragmented, this majestic ridge -- which has been designated "One of Earth's Last Great Places" by The Nature Conservancy -- supports a diversity of rare plants and animals. Its viewshed stretches for hundreds of square miles. Exploitation of its fragile terrain would destroy a precious natural resource.

Save The Ridge, a grassroots citizens group, asks for your help in protecting the Shawangunk ridge from development.

S.T.R. Mission Statement: Save the Ridge is a citizens' group with the purpose of saving the Awosting Reserve and other lands in the northern Shawangunks from development. Ideally we would like to see the former purchased at a fair price and added to Minnewaska State Park Preserve. We believe this is the best solution for the local and recreational human population, and crucial for maintaining a rare, nonfragmented habitat for nature. We function mainly through working committees and a coordinating committee, and welcome participation by anyone who shares our vision.

Hopeful Moves toward Preservation of the Awosting Reserve!

This threat is not over till it’s over, but . . .
The Trust for Public Land (TPL) announced that it has signed a contract for the purchase of 2,500 acres of Awosting Reserve! TPL plans to sell the land to New York State to be added to Minnewaska State Park.
